Raina Telgemeier is an American graphic novelist, best known for her graphic memoirs “Smile,” “Sisters,” and “Drama.” She was born on April 25, 1971 in San Anselmo, California and grew up in San Francisco. She had a childhood filled with many dental problems and visits from the dentist. She has been drawing ever since she was a child.

She attended the University of California at Berkeley where she majored in English literature, but decided to pursue a career in art instead of becoming a teacher or librarian as her parents had hoped. At age seventeen, she started working as an intern at Nickelodeon Magazine and later became an illustrator for children’s books through Hyperion Books for Children where she worked on her first book called “Babymouse: Queen of the World!” which won several awards including the Eisner Award for Best Publication for Kids (ages 8-12) in 2006.
