Hi! 🙂 (I got this as a free e-Book from the publisher) This is just a note regarding Mazur’s book ‘Principles and practice of physics’ – I probably got it because I like Eric Mazur’s approach to teaching (based on studies revealing embarrassing misconceptions among physics students), and because I appreciate getting a bit more insight than just deriving a formula and practicing putting it to use. That this approach takes more time is stated. A course needs to match the approach, I guess.
As a teacher I have found Eric Mazur’s approach to teaching Physics to be very effective. He doesn’t just show you how to put the formula that you are learning to use or derive, he goes further and helps you learn the fundamental principle so that you understand why the formula works. For example, in this book, we explore the concepts of Newtonian Mechanics and Energy and then we derive forms of Newton’s Laws and the Laws of Conservation of Energy. The emphasis is on designing experiments (and discussions thereof) that allows students to experience for themselves the confusing state that physics students are often in during their college years. Making use of demonstrations and examples as much as possible really helps drive home a concept. This is particularly helpful with Newtonian mechanics where we often tend to rely on formulas without having a firm understanding of the concepts behind them. This book also has discussions that offer insight on some of the trickier concepts in physics.

Eric Mazur is the Balkanski Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at Harvard University and Area Dean of Applied Physics. As an internationally recognized scientist and researcher, he leads a vigorous research program in optical physics and supervises one of the largest research groups in the Physics Department at Harvard University.
